it's not a secret that the world we live in is falling apart and in desperate need of restoration and healing. but why is this? where did we go wrong?
yes i know, it all began with a piece of fruit. but even so.. people managed to still live in the world and not corrupt and destroy it to the degree we have today. so why is it going up in flames now? a lust for power? irreconcilable differences or intolerance? why does it seem like more and more bad people are doing more and more bad things?
it forces us as humans, to take sides against one another. the good side vs the bad side, the american side vs.. the rest of the world side, the liberal vs conservative. we try to seek out the good, and reconcile ourselves with it. we want to be one of the "good guys."
but i don't think the world is distinctly made up of good people, and bad people. it is simply made up of people. people who in their finest moments are capable of benevolent acts of selfless generosity and sacrifice. [which i will add, are concrete mosaics from the character of God.]
and also in their lowest moments.. of unspeakable atrocities, destruction, and deceit. the nature of human kind has been argued for centuries. are we innately good, or bad? i do not know. my first instinct would be to say bad, as someone once said "we train children to go in the way they should go. point being, we must train them." they don't instinctively do the right thing. infact, most often they do the wrong thing.
but that would also mean then, that the immorality and corrupt tendencies of the human race can be cured by simply training and molding people to channel goodness. but i don't know if i believe that either. some people just seem to be born to do insolent and atroscious acts.
but let's think of humans.. like clay. clay is simply material. and you can fill it with anything you want, and shape & mold it for different purposes.. but at the end of the day, the DNA of clay does not change.
ie: i could take a lump of clay, mold it into a beautiful vase, paint the vase, fill it with beautiful flowers, and give it to an elderly woman. with a pupppy. aww you say, that's so sweet.
or: with the same piece of clay, i could mold a dagger. i could paint it, sharpen it, wear a black cape, and sneak up behind the same old lady and... give her such a fright she falls over and dies.
it's the same piece of clay at the beginning.. however, it's eventually molded and used for completely different purposes at the end. but both the vase and the dagger, however outwardly perceived, are simply clay. they are of the same substance.
i think that is how we are as humans. we are shaped and molded into the people we become. but even so.. i could use the same lovely vase, and smash it against the old ladies window. just because it's a pretty vase, doesn't mean it will be used to it's full right and good potential. it was beautiful sure, but nothing good came from it.
also, i could take my sharpened dagger.. and.. use it to cut some pretty flowers to give to the old lady. maybe not a very well-intentioned item, and more often then not used for destruction, but in the end.. it is still capable of something right and good.
does that mean we are all capable of selfless sacrifice AND unspeakable atrocities? that the only thing that determines whether i become a nun or a hitman is how i am molded?
I don't know.
but i think.. we ARE capable of letting God, and others mold and shape us into the something that can be used for good. like the vase. it is a choice we can make. and then we can use our shape, whatever it is, to channel good into the world for human kind. that is all we can really do.
good night.
